Chapter 16

Ben woke up and was still in a grumpy mood. It bothered him that he wouldn’t be able to see Delaney until probably Sunday, if he was lucky. He didn’t know how to compete against a rich guy, when he was in entirely opposite circumstances.

Delaney drove herself to the private airport and was very excited to see Derek again. She didn’t date very often. She’d been hurt before and was cautious and private. But Derek was cute and fun to talk to. He made Delaney feel pampered. Saturday morning, Derek arrived early to the airport. Delaney was a little apprehensive about flying. She’d only been in a plane a few times. Derek, sensing her nerves, reached over to touch her hand. It was warm and pleasant.

“This is your plane?” Delaney asked in awe.

“Yes, this is my private plane.”

“This is yours, not your parents?” Delaney asked, for clarification.

“No. It’s all mine. I bought it,” laughed Derek, delighted by her innocence.

The plane was luxurious and made her feel safe. Derek had arranged for a special breakfast to be served. The plane was equipped with a table that seated four passengers. It was covered with a linen table cloth. They also had linen napkins, and the centerpiece was a beautiful flower arrangement of fresh, brightly-colored flowers in a glass vase. They were served French toast, scrambled eggs, and a fruit platter. They had an assortment of drinks. Everything was served on real China plates. Derek’s monogram was in gold in the center of each plate, including the bread plate. Their drinks were in real glasses instead of plastic, like on a commercial flight. Everyone on the plane made sure that Derek and Delaney were pampered. Delaney wasn’t used to this, and it made her a little uncomfortable.

By the time the plane landed, Delaney was ready to be back on the ground. Next, they took a boat ride to the island. Delaney was busy checking out the crowd.

“Is everything okay? You look a little nervous.”

“I’m feeling a little motion sick. I’ll be all right in a few minutes.”

Derek and Delaney stood on the deck enjoying the warmth of the sun and the smell of the ocean. Delaney snuck little peeks at Derek’s blond hair and brown eyes. He was very handsome even with that scar above his eye. He still looked like a male model.

“How did you get that scar?”

“Oh, my friend and I were fencing. When we finished, I took my face shield off and was untying my shoe. He walked in swinging his sword, and it clipped me,” Derek explained, rubbing the scar.

“It’s so close to your eye. You’re lucky you didn’t lose it,” commented Delaney.

“Yeah, I know. My friend felt bad about it. I forget about it, because I can’t see it,” smiled Derek.

Catalina Island was beautiful. The island was bigger than Delaney expected. The sky was bright blue. But, this island wasn’t tropical like Hawaii, even though it did have palm trees. It was more like a desert island. Downtown was quaint with little shops and restaurants.
